The .223 Remington 52gr BTHP MOD-1 has long been one of our favorite lower-cost, high-value predator loads. It consistently exceeded expectations for group size, cleanliness, and terminal performance inside realistic hunting distances. MOD-1 represents a refined evolution of a proven recipe.

Projectile Details – Hornady 52gr BTHP w/ Cannelure

This load uses the Hornady 52gr Boat Tail Hollow Point with cannelure, a bullet known for excellent accuracy, reliable feeding, and consistent terminal behavior at practical predator velocities.

• Ballistic Coefficient (G1): 0.224

• Designed for 0–300 yard efficiency

• Optimized for modern .223 Rem chambers, barrel lengths, and twist rates

This is not a long-range load. It is a short-range predator and varmint round, built for fast engagement distances where most coyotes are actually taken.

Terminal behavior notes:

• Generally fur-friendly on coyotes and bobcats

• Not fur-friendly on smaller animals such as fox

• Not tuned for ultra-low SDs; tuned for practical field performance and reliability

Velocity Chart

Always chronograph your ammo through your rifle for true real-world results, as chamber dimensions, barrel length, gas system configuration, suppressor design, and atmospheric conditions can affect velocity.

MOD-1 Design Notes & Performance Intent

This MOD-1 variant is loaded slightly hotter than traditional .223 Remington offerings. This was done intentionally.

• Ideal for bolt-action rifles

• Extensively tested in semi-automatic platforms with positive results

• May be slightly hot for some tighter-spec semi-automatic rifles

• Use at your own risk and ensure your firearm is properly configured and maintained

Suppressor-Optimized Configuration

This load is optimized specifically for:

• Traditional baffle-style suppressors

• Shorter barrel lengths

• Shorter gas system configurations

• Standard buffer systems

Because of this tuning, rifles equipped with:

• Very long gas systems

• Flow-through suppressors

• Heavier-than-normal buffer systems

may experience cycling inconsistencies. Velocity was increased slightly to improve reliability and cleanliness in the most common predator-hunting setups.

Clean-Running, Semi-Auto Friendly

One of the defining characteristics of this load is how clean it runs. The tuning focus was reducing carbon buildup in semi-automatic rifles, allowing longer intervals between cleanings without sacrificing reliability or accuracy.
