A Short History of the 6.8mm SPC
The 6.8mm Remington SPC (Special Purpose Cartridge) was developed in the early 2000s by Remington and U.S. Special Operations personnel seeking a cartridge with better terminal performance than 5.56 NATO—particularly from short-barreled rifles. Using a shortened .30 Remington case necked down to .277 caliber, the 6.8 SPC bridges the gap between intermediate cartridges and full-power rifle rounds. It became especially popular among hog hunters, defensive shooters, and backcountry hunters running AR-15 platforms due to its superior stopping power and compatibility with standard lower receivers.
