Notes from Ally Munitions
We’ve extensively tested the Vortex Viper HD lineup, and after spending a lot of time behind these optics we’ve determined this is the line to have for most hunting applications. When you combine the feature set, optical performance, and Vortex’s top-notch customer service and warranty, they become a very clear choice.
For that reason, we’ve chosen to carry our three favorite models in the lineup.
Viper HD 2-10×42
The 2-10×42 is an excellent mid-range optic and is perfect for the majority of traditional hunting situations.
Whether you're deer stand hunting or varmint hunting, this scope really shines. In our low-light testing it actually beat several much higher-priced optics, which surprised us. The combination of the simple Dead-Hold reticle and illuminated center dot makes this a very easy optic to run in the field.
Our favorite use case for this scope is predator hunting. The magnification range is extremely practical, and the center dot illumination makes quick target acquisition easy during low-light calling setups.
Viper HD 3-15×44
The 3-15×44 may be the most versatile optic in the entire lineup.
In low-light testing against optics in the same price range—and even several that cost more—the Viper HD consistently edged out the competition. Over the past year we tested a sample set of five of these optics, and to say we are impressed would be an understatement.
We prefer the MRAD version, as mil-based systems have become our primary choice in the hunting world due to their simplicity.
This scope remains lightweight, offers an easy-to-use elevation turret with zero stop, and uses the VMR reticle that provides simple wind holds in 0.5 mil increments.
While it is a second focal plane optic, if we are making longer range shots we will already be at 15×, so this becomes a non-issue.
You also retain the illuminated center dot, which works great for low-light varmint and predator hunting.
We consider this optic the perfect do-it-all hunting scope, especially on lighter hunting rifles where most shots occur within a few hundred yards but the ability to dial for longer shots still exists.
Viper HD 5-25×50 FFP
The 5-25×50 FFP is our choice for rifles built specifically for longer-range hunting applications.
First, we absolutely love the VMR-4 reticle. It’s probably our favorite reticle in the lineup because it keeps things simple while still providing enough information to confidently make longer-range impacts.
Even though it offers significant magnification, the scope still maintains a reasonable weight for hunting rifles, which is important for mountain or open-country setups.
Low-light performance is excellent, and because this scope is first focal plane, the subtensions remain accurate at any magnification.
The illumination also allows the reticle to remain visible on lower magnification settings for quick close-range shots when needed.
We currently run these optics on longer-range capable hunting platforms such as the 6.5 PRC and 7 PRC, where they provide the ability to push shots farther while still keeping the rifle practical for field use.
For open-country hunting rifles designed for longer-range engagements, this is a very strong option.
