Coyotero – Built for the Serious Predator Hunter
The 22 ARC was practically made for the modern predator-hunting AR, and we knew our first Coyotero offering for this cartridge needed to take full advantage of that.
Choosing the projectile wasn't easy.
We built and tested a substantial number of different Coyotero combinations before sitting down and asking ourselves one question: What should our first 22 ARC predator load actually accomplish?
Thermal hunting has changed the game. For a large portion of today's serious predator hunters, the rifle is an AR, the optic is a thermal, and the ammunition needs to provide a flat, predictable trajectory that makes fast decisions in the field easier.
After a lot of testing and even more deliberation, we established our standard.
From a 16" barrel with a 100-yard zero, we wanted approximately 6" of drop at 300 yards.
We wanted excellent accuracy.
We wanted reliable function across the platforms we actually hunt with.
We wanted exceptional terminal performance.
And we wanted a projectile that gave us the best opportunity to balance hard-hitting performance with reasonable fur preservation under the right conditions.
The Hornady 53gr V-MAX became our choice.
Its ballistic performance allowed us to outperform many of the lower-BC alternatives we evaluated while giving us the velocity and terminal characteristics we wanted from the 22 ARC.
Most importantly, it met the standards we established before we ever took it hunting.
Our 16" performance standard was met.
Our accuracy standards were met.
Our close-range ballistic-gel standard was met.
Then we took it into the field.
The results on coyotes have been exceptional.
The best way we can describe it is that it gives us the kind of predator performance we've traditionally associated with the 22-250, but from the AR-15 platform.
This is exactly what we wanted Coyotero 22 ARC to be.

Why the 53gr V-MAX?
Choosing the 53gr Hornady V-MAX wasn't as simple as picking a lightweight projectile and pushing it as fast as possible.
We tested a substantial number of projectile and load combinations across both lighter and heavier weight classes before settling on what we wanted from our first Coyotero 22 ARC offering.
And trust us—the 62gr ELD-VT looked extremely appealing.
Within its weight class, the 62gr ELD-VT offers an exceptional ballistic coefficient. On paper, there is a lot to like about it, and we spent a tremendous amount of time working with the projectile in the Boom Room trying to make it meet our standards.
We also understood that the 62gr ELD-VT requires a higher impact-velocity envelope for the type of expansion we wanted. Initially, we believed its excellent BC and retained velocity could overcome that limitation across the distances where we intended to use it.
The problem wasn't the BC.
It was precision.
After many hours of testing, we simply could not get the 62gr ELD-VT to consistently meet the precision standards we've established for Coyotero ammunition.
The 53gr V-MAX did.
In fact, the 53gr V-MAX surpassed our expectations and ultimately outperformed many of the lighter and heavier projectile options we evaluated in this category when we looked at the complete package—not just one number on a ballistic chart.
Our primary performance standard was simple: make the 22 ARC as flat shooting as reasonably possible from a 16" barrel while maintaining the accuracy, reliability, consistency, and terminal performance we require from Coyotero.
With a 100-yard zero, we established a goal of approximately 6" of drop at 300 yards from the 16" platform.
We met it.
Across our testing, this offering has also produced an average SD of approximately 15 FPS.
That combination of velocity, ballistic efficiency, precision, and consistency is exactly what we wanted for the modern thermal hunter.
Longer barrels only build on that capability. During testing with our 22" platforms and a 100-yard zero, we observed approximately 4.5" of drop at 300 yards.
We didn't choose the 53gr V-MAX because it had the most impressive single specification on paper.
We chose it because after extensive testing, it gave us the best complete performance package for the job.
For Coyotero, that's what matters.

Field Performance & Gel Testing
Before taking the Coyotero 22 ARC 53gr V-MAX into the field, we established a terminal-performance standard using ballistic gel.
Our 22" test platforms were used for repeated gel testing at 20 yards. We consistently observed full projectile expansion beginning approximately 1" after entry. More importantly, the behavior was repeatable from shot to shot.
That gave us the confidence to move from controlled testing into actual predator hunting.
On coyotes, the results have been exceptional.
Most of our field shots have occurred at approximately 50 yards and beyond, and the 53gr V-MAX has delivered the kind of hard-hitting terminal performance we wanted from the 22 ARC.
The best comparison we can make is that it gives us performance reminiscent of a 22-250 while maintaining the advantages of the AR-15 platform.
Fur performance has also been encouraging.
Depending on impact velocity, distance, shot placement, and the individual animal, we've found the 53gr V-MAX to be reasonably fur friendly under the right circumstances. That was one of our goals when choosing the 53gr—we wanted something capable of hitting coyotes extremely hard without automatically giving up on fur preservation.
There is no such thing as a projectile that's guaranteed to be fur friendly under every circumstance. Velocity and range matter. Shot placement matters. The angle of the animal matters. What the projectile encounters after impact matters.
We'll continue collecting field data as we put more coyotes in front of this offering, but what we've seen so far is exactly what we hoped to see.
Fast. Flat. Accurate. Hard hitting.

Platform Compatibility & Testing
The Coyotero 22 ARC 53gr V-MAX is designed and tested for use in both semi-automatic and bolt-action 22 ARC rifles.
Our semi-automatic testing was completed using flow-through-style suppressors, while our bolt-action testing was completed using traditional baffled suppressors. Keep this distinction in mind when comparing our published results with what you may see from your individual rifle and suppressor configuration.
We've tested this ammunition across substantial environmental swings, including extreme heat and extreme cold. We don't develop ammunition around one rifle or one comfortable day at the range. We want to understand how the complete system behaves as conditions and configurations change.
Reliability, accuracy, feeding, environmental stability, suppressor configuration, barrel length, and overall rifle behavior all have to work together before we're satisfied with an offering.
We spared no expense during the development of our 22 ARC ammunition. The amount of testing and data collection that went into establishing our accuracy and performance standards was substantial, and the Coyotero 53gr V-MAX had to meet those standards before it could carry the name.
This is performance-based, handloaded ammunition—not magazine-dump-into-trash ammo.
As our 22 ARC testing library continues to grow, we'll publish additional platform data. When that information becomes available, keep in mind that our semi-auto baseline was established using flow-through-style suppressors.

How These Velocities Are Calculated: Our In-House Ballistic Engine
Our ballistic data starts with real chronograph results collected through actual test rifles—not generic published velocities or a single test barrel.
That data is incorporated into Ally Munitions' in-house ballistic engine, where we evaluate the larger data set accumulated throughout development.
Our modeling considers live-fire chronograph results, barrel length, temperature sensitivity, atmospheric conditions, platform-specific variables, and the real-world velocity variation observed throughout testing.
For the Coyotero 22 ARC 53gr V-MAX, we've recorded an average SD of approximately 15 FPS across our testing.
These numbers are intended to provide a realistic reference based on the substantial amount of data we've collected. Individual rifles will vary due to chamber specifications, barrel condition, suppressor configuration, environmental conditions, and other platform-specific factors.

Accuracy & Consistency
Accuracy was one of the biggest deciding factors in selecting the 53gr V-MAX for this offering.
We tested a wide range of projectile options, including several that looked extremely attractive on paper, but the Coyotero standard isn't built around theoretical performance. It has to shoot.
The 53gr V-MAX consistently met the precision requirements we established for this load and ultimately outperformed several lighter and heavier projectile options when we looked at the complete package.
Across our testing, this ammunition has produced an average SD of approximately 15 FPS while maintaining the group-size consistency we expect from Coyotero ammunition.
This is exactly why we spend so much time in development before releasing a load. Ballistic coefficient, velocity, terminal behavior, and component availability all matter, but none of those things mean much if the ammunition doesn't consistently put rounds where they're supposed to go.
Coyotero is built for the serious predator hunter. Every round is handloaded with performance at the forefront and tested until we're satisfied that accuracy, consistency, reliability, and field performance are working together.
If it doesn't meet that standard, it doesn't carry the Coyotero name.

Packaging & Storage
The Coyotero 22 ARC 53gr V-MAX is packaged in a 20-round heavy-mil sealed, resealable bag with a silica gel pack inside.
There is a reason we package our ammunition this way.
We've spent a significant amount of time developing and testing the variables that affect ammunition and component storage. How ammunition is packaged, how components are stored before loading, and how the finished ammunition is stored after production can all play a role in maintaining consistency over time.
Our goal is to maintain the most stable storage environment reasonably possible. You don't want ammunition exposed to excessive moisture, but you also don't want it unnecessarily exposed to extreme environmental conditions or constant changes in its storage environment.
The heavy-mil bag provides an additional barrier between the ammunition and the outside environment, while the included silica gel pack helps manage moisture inside the package.
After opening the bag, leave the silica gel pack inside and reseal the bag when you're finished. The resealable bag is part of the storage system and is intended to continue protecting the ammunition after the original seal has been opened.
For long-term storage, keep ammunition in a stable, temperature-controlled environment whenever possible and avoid prolonged exposure to excessive heat, direct sunlight, high humidity, or major environmental swings.
We've put a tremendous amount of effort into controlling how our components and finished ammunition are stored before they reach you. Maintaining those same good storage practices after purchase gives you the best opportunity for consistent results when it's time to head into the field.
